This is a short beginners guide written in a conversational tone for newly diagnosed diabetics, or for diabetics that just need the basic guidelines on the tools you needed to make themselves healthier. Some topics covered are kitchen necessities, reading labels, diet, foods to avoid, and exercise. I want to stress the reason I wrote this is because this is how I helped myself until I got to class. I then found out that the guidelines I used in this publication is correct, by my Dr's standards, and since it has worked for me I wanted to share. This is only one of many options your Dr might use to help you control your diabetes.
I also want to share, while using this diet I have lost over 50 lbs over 3 months. I have been able to control my Blood Sugar levels and maintain my weight loss. This may not be how YOUR dr wants you to ultimately maintain your blood sugar if you are diabetic but it will help you until you do get into a class.
If you are NOT diabetic but are looking for a life style change to help you lose weight and maintain it, then this may help you.

The author sounds like a nice woman who had to face (less than 9 months ago) a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. This book is her story. She wisely points out that she is not a medical professional, which makes the books listing under Medicine and Science a bit confusing to me. Her experience maybe similar to many others, but some of the things she assumes to be universal truths are not.She talks about how the protein in a food decreases the amount of carbs. In fact she puts into large bold print "Total Carbohydrates - Total Protein = Total Carbs". Really? That's the very first time I ever heard that. And I don't believe it. Yes, having both protein and fat along with carbs does slow down digestion and helps avoid really high blood glucose spikes. But many diabetics use a formula more like "Total Carbohydrates - Total fiber = Total Carbs".
She also assumes that all diabetics are using a 45 carb meal plan. This is one guideline. Some people actually count carbs, especially if they are using insulin, to get a more accurate reading.
"I suggest you find a brand of water you like and stock up on it" - ummmm.... or you could just use the stuff from the tap, or get a water filter if you household water isn't tasty enough.
Her reliance on her blood glucose meter sounds a bit over the top. As are her suggestions as to preparing to leave the house. For most Type 2 diabetics on drugs such as metformin, most insurance companies won't even cover test strips for more than 1 or 2 per day. The chance of a severe low is very low. Most Type 2s test once a day or even less often. They focus on the pattern of the BG readings. They get their BG meter free (yes, the companies make their money on the strips) and the doctor doesn't tell them which one to get.
I'm speaking as someone who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about 14 years ago, and who has a grandchild diagnosed with Type 1 7 years ago. I've been reading about, studying, attending diabetes conferences, etc. ever since.
